Bicycle Circulation and Bicycle Parking Planning Study

To facilitate the growing use of bicycles at UCSD, the Campus Planning Office (CPO) initiated a study (July 1993) to evaluate the current condition of bicycle circulation and parking, and to determine the improvements needed to serve the campus community through the year 2005. The recommended plan consists of the following components: 1) a comprehensive network of bicycle routes comprised of existing and new paths to link all areas of campus and connect to public bike routes adjoining campus; 2) proposed improvements to resolve safety conflicts occurring between bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists along some bike routes; 3) standards for the type, quantity and location of bike parking facilities; and 4) strategies for funding and phasing new routes and parking facilities.

The concepts and recommendations discussed in this report were developed by the UCSD Campus Planning Office in collaboration with the Bicycle Circulation and Bicycle Parking Planning Advisory Committee (PAC). The PAC consisted of faculty, staff and students representing various campus offices, committees, and each undergraduate college. The report was reviewed by the UCSD Design Review Board (DRB) and approved by the Campus/Community Planning Committee (C/CPC).

As the campus develops, additional opportunities for revised and improved bicycle circulation may arise. Potential opportunities for improved bicycle routes, in particular a revised north-south route through central campus, should continue to be a priority. Suggestions from the campus community regarding improved bicycle circulation and parking are welcome and may be directed to the Campus Planning Office.
