Campus Landscape Planning Study
The Rustic Landscape:
Edges, Entries, Streets & Parking

The 1993 Campus Landscape Planning Study provides an updated landscape concept for UCSD.
It expands upon the MasterPlan study, which envisioned the campus landscape transitioning from
a rustic character on the outside of campus neighborhoods to a more highly designed discrete
character within neighborhoods. The rustic landscape - consisting of the perimeter campus edges
and neighborhood edges, entries, streets and parking areas - reflects the character of the native
California landscape with the addition of eucalyptus trees. This landscape character sets the primary
identity and theme for the campus. In contrast, the discrete landscape may consist of more
formal, ornamental plantings associated with a specific campus building of the landscape theme
for a neighborhood. Transitional landscapes between the rustic and discrete area are provided
by campus recreation fields, large lawn areas, and major walks.
The Campus Landscape Planning Study focuses specifically on the rustic landscape. This
discrete landscape within the campus neighborhoods will be addressed as part of neighborhood
planning studies, while the design of transitional landscapes will be developed at the project
level for specific capital improvements.
