The UCSD Park

The UCSD Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) and the Master Plan study have designated campus natural resources consisting of canyons, steep slopes, native vegetation and eucalyptus groves as the Park. The Park serves as an integrated open space system throughout campus. It consists of three types of natural reserves (whose environs are distinct from land areas within the UC-wide Natural Reserves System administered by the Office of the President) that have different constraints on development:

UCSD Park
  • Ecological Reserve includes the canyons north of Voigt Drive, Skeleton Canyon at SIO with its associated buffer/transition area, the Scripps Coastal Reserve, and the slope east of La Jolla Shores Drive adjacent to the Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum (this latter slope area was added to the Ecological Reserve at the request of the California Coastal Commission due to aesthetic value rather than ecological significance.)

No buildings, facilities, roads, or driveways will be permitted in this area of the Park.

  • Grove Reserve includes the major eucalyptus grove in the central area of the main campus, stretching from Genesee Avenue to the northern end of sio.

New developments in this portion of the Park are strongly discouraged and would require an amendment of the LRDP and the Master Plan study.

  • Restoration Lands include hillsides and disturbed canyons.

New developments in this portion of the Park are strongly discouraged and would require an amendment of the LRDP and the Master Plan study. Efforts should be made to restore portions of the disturbed areas to complete and connect the grove and the ecological reserves of the Park to enhance the integrity of the natural ecosystems.

Precise boundaries have been approved by C/CPC and are on file with Physical Planning (Campus Planning Office).
