About the Physical & Community Planning Office

Physical & Community Planning is a department within Resource Management and Planning (RMP) Vice Chancellor area. Physical and Community Planning works closely with other departments in RMP including Facilities Design and Construction, Facilities Management, Capital Planning, Real Estate, Institutional Research, Transportation Services, Environmental Health and Safety as well as colleagues in Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Housing Dining and Hospitality, Development Office, Health Sciences, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

From its inception in 1960, the University of California, San Diego has engaged in integrated campus planning. Its earliest formal plans, the 1963 Academic Plan and the 1963 Long Range Development Plan (LRDP), defined key academic and auxiliary program goals, and described physical design concepts which guided the transformation of the main campus site, a former military training base, into a world class research university. Nearly 50 years and four long range development plans later, Physical & Community Planning is carrying on the tradition of sound planning and informed decision making to preserve and enhance the campus environment for generations to come.
